Taken at just 14 years old, she was forced into silence, stripped of her autonomy, and subjected to relentless fear.
Life rarely follows a straight line. Overcoming trauma, whether it’s a major life-altering trauma, a divorce, or an unexpected career loss, we all face moments that take us off our planned path. Elizabeth’s new book, Detours, was written for anyone feeling lost or stuck at these crossroads. “This book is meant to be a friend and a voice of encouragement,” Elizabeth says. She then outlines “rest stops” that help navigate difficult times:

Rest Stop 1: Grieve the Lost Path

It is vital to allow yourself to mourn the life you thought you’d have. Elizabeth noted that when her parents divorced years later, she had to grieve the loss of the family dynamic she cherished. There is no shame in grieving what you lost; it’s a necessary step in moving forward.

Rest Stop 2: Recognize How You’ve Changed

Trauma changes us, but that isn’t always negative. Give yourself grace as you get to know the new version of yourself. You aren’t the same person you were before or during the detour, and that is okay.

Rest Stop 3: Resist Isolation

When we are hurting, often our instinct is to withdraw. Elizabeth urges us to do the opposite: pursue connection fearlessly. Healing from trauma happens in community, not in solitude.

Rest Stop 4: Reflect on New Destinations

Finally, take inventory of the joys, big and small, that come your way. You may be on a road you never intended to travel, but that doesn’t mean it won’t bring you to a beautiful destination.

She points out that false reports are statistically rare, yet the fear of not being believed silences countless victims. “I would rather be wrong and be kind and be understanding than disbelieve survivors,” she stated. Quick fix solutions are regularly associated with quickly falling back into old habits. True, lasting freedom comes from a much deeper place, often at a much slower pace.

If you’ve ever wondered why some efforts to change stick while others fade, you’re not alone. They might feel good in the moment, but when life throws you its challenges, they don’t have the power to sustain you.

Here’s why some attempts at addiction recovery fail:

They treat symptoms, not causes. Quick fixes often address behaviors without tapping into the underlying beliefs and wounds that fuel them. Lasting change is constructed with principles that guide your actions even when the motivation has evaporated.

They keep you tied to the problem. When you constantly identify as an “addict,” you shackle yourself to your past. This label can prevent you from seeing yourself as the person you are becoming, someone who is whole, healed, and moving forward with life after addiction recovery.

The answer lies in shifting how you see yourself. You become what you repeatedly do and what you repeatedly tell yourself you are. Lasting change isn’t about fighting your old self; it’s about building a new one from the ground up.

This goal has a practical formula. These four pillars of addiction recovery provide a framework for creating your new identity, one choice at a time.

1. Be Honest

Radical honesty is where true change begins. It means looking at yourself without excuses or denial. You can’t change what you’re not willing to see. When you commit to being honest, you break free from the patterns that kept you trapped in the past.

2. Have Integrity

Integrity is about aligning your actions with your beliefs. It means keeping the promises you make to yourself. As you do this, you rebuild self-trust, and self-trust creates self-confidence.

3. Be Accountable

Taking ownership of your choices is incredibly empowering. When you stop blaming others or your circumstances, you realize that the power to change is in your hands. Accountability reminds you that you have control over your life.

4. Help Someone

When you help others, you can not only see but feel and truly experience the growth you have made. Helping others reinforces your new identity and gives you a sense of purpose beyond your own struggles. Every time you say “I am an addict,” you reinforce an identity rooted in your darkest moments. But when you declare “I am recovered,” something profound shifts in your brain. When you say it, you can begin to believe it.

The manifesto proudly proclaims: “I am RECOVERED!” This isn’t wishful thinking, it’s neural retraining. As the manifesto states, “I plant the seed of truth” with every affirmation.

These words are battle cries against the voices that want to keep you small. The manifesto acknowledges this tension: “The recovery culture tells me a hundred reasons to stay sick, but I will give a thousand definitive reasons that I am whole.”

When you speak recovery into existence, you’re remembering who you truly are beneath the addiction.

Here are four ways to embody its transformative principles:

Speak It

What you say, you create. Build belief with your words. Replace “I’m struggling with addiction” with “I am recovered.” Replace “I can’t” with “I choose differently.” The manifesto reminds us: “I speak only words of truth and light.”

Choose It

With every decision you choose between your old identity and your recovered self? When faced with temptation, ask: “What would a recovered person choose?” Each healthy choice strengthens your declaration.

Give It

Share love and truth with others on their journey. The manifesto states: “When I teach others, I teach them the truth that I am RECOVERED!” Your story of transformation becomes a lighthouse for others lost in the dark.

Live It

Bring recovery into your thoughts, relationships, and daily actions. This means showing up authentically, pursuing your dreams, and refusing to let your past define your future.

The breaking point came during a beating when his father said, “If I knew you were gonna be like this as a baby, I’d have thrown you in the trash.” That moment of rejection became the foundation of a belief system that would fuel his addiction: I am worthless.
Daniel’s healing journey didn’t begin with a moment of clarity or spiritual awakening. It started with an ultimatum from his wife: “Get help or don’t come home.” Facing the choice between losing his family forever or entering treatment, Daniel chose help. Not because he believed in it, but because he couldn’t bear the thought of never knowing his grandchildren.

“I didn’t even know this place was called Wasatch Recovery until I saw it on my journal a couple days later,” Daniel admitted. He entered treatment planning to do his time like a jail sentence, say the right things to the right people, and return to using.

But something unexpected happened in those group therapy sessions. Even while sitting silently in the back, thinking about where to get his next hit, Daniel began hearing stories that resonated. The vulnerability of others started chipping away at his defensive walls.

Asked to speak to his deceased father, Daniel couldn’t even form words before breaking down completely. For the first time, he grieved not just his father’s death, but the relationship they never had and the healing conversation that would never come.

When the therapist, speaking as his father, said “It’s okay, I love you,” something shifted fundamentally in Daniel’s healing journey. When a therapist confronted him about sneaking in, he looked at her and said, “At least I’m not trying to sneak out.” They let him keep coming.

“I wanted to get as much as I could,” he explained, absorbing every piece of wisdom he could find. “I felt like I stole from Wasatch because I got a lot more than what I paid for.” This hunger for continued growth in his healing journey reflected a profound shift.
Traditional addiction recovery programs focus on exactly that—the recovery. The long hours spent struggling with withdrawals, the daily effort to resist temptation, and the intense process are all crucial to healing your body from your addiction.

Once you reach that point, however, you are no longer “in recovery.” You are recovered. And that mindset makes all the difference for your life after addiction.

You’ve probably heard that words have power, and that’s because it’s true. The words you use to describe yourself and your experience with addiction directly influence your beliefs and your actions, so it’s important to choose the right ones.

Let’s talk about why we love the word “recovered.” Right in the middle is the word “over.” When you’re recovered (past tense), you are over your addiction physically, and it’s important to stay over it emotionally and mentally as well.

Being over your addiction means that you are no longer defined by it. You are not stuck in its shadow. It’s an experience you went through, but it is not who you are. Your true, authentic self that has always been there now has a chance to shine. You can look forward to life after addiction as your real self, doing the things you were born to do.

With the power of your words in mind, work to let go of the old labels others may have given you or you may have given yourself. You are not “an addict”—you are someone who has recovered from an addiction.

Try not to think of yourself as “in recovery.” That phrase can easily tie you to the past, to an inaccurate version of yourself. Instead, refer to yourself as “recovered” and ready to achieve the goals, hopes, and dreams you’ve always had. Your identity isn’t your past addiction. Your identity is your current, healed self who’s ready to grow and live life to the fullest.

This is so much easier said than done, and difficult labels tend to stick if we don’t have help to remove them. For support and encouragement as you work through this shift in labels and mindset, consider Todd’s RecoverED course or individual coaching sessions to help free yourself and build a positive life after addiction.

Being recovered means using positive words and positive beliefs to fuel positive actions. It means starting a new life after addiction, one where your goals and dreams become real. Being fully recovered means hope for the future.

Gabe beat his cancer, but he became addicted to the medication, turning to a life of drug use and dealing on the streets.

Since his decision to get help and get back on track, he’s experienced a deep change and a deep restoration to his true, pre-addiction self. He’s making connections and building a community in his job at the local grocery store. He’s finding joy in serving others and doing the little things to take care of himself. And he’s even making music again.
